Marie Baker


Marie G. Baker, 95, of Westminster, died Saturday evening, June 4, 2005 after a brief illness. Born July 15, 1909 in Keysville, she was the daughter of the late Jeremiah F. and Della M. Adams Houck. Her husband, Jesse Franklin "Pap" Baker, preceded her in death on March 19, 1987.

For many years, Marie worked as a seamstress for L. Grief Brothers/English American Tailors, retiring in 1984. She also worked with her husband on the Herb Cover and Francis Herring Farms. She was a long-time faithful member of Kriders United Church of Christ and was an experienced quilter who donated a quilt annually for the church quilt raffle. She also loved to attend auctions and collected lamps, chickens on nests, knickknacks, whatnots and children's tea sets. She attended many church suppers and enjoyed making friends and talking with everyone she met.

Surviving her are children and spouses, Edna M. Stephan, Thelma L. and H. Scott Carr, and Raymond L. and June Baker, all of Westminster; Anna M. and William Ebaugh of Ocean City, and David G. Baker of Rock Hill, S.C.; brother, Norman R. Houck of Taneytown; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Franklin "Junior" Baker; son-in-law, George Stephan; and a sister, Ruth J. Hoffman.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7 from Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster, with her pastor, the Rev. Jan Rupp-Hawkins, officiating. Burial will follow in Kriders UCC Cemetery in Westminster. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 6 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
