Tyler Johnson Obituary

Tyler Joseph Johnson, 25, of Mt. Airy, MD, died Saturday, January 25 in Columbia, MD.

Born August 2, 1988 in Columbia, MD, Tyler was the first child of Howard P. Johnson, Jr. and Nora Ryan Johnson of Mt. Airy, and the first grandchild of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Ryan, Jr. of Southbury, CT and Howard P. Johnson of Montclair, NJ and Katherine Addison Johnson of Annapolis, MD.

A 2006 graduate of Centennial High School, Tyler worked towards a Culinary Arts degree at Howard Community College. He worked as a chef at several area restaurants before starting a retail job at Zumiez, a specialty gear and clothing store for skateboarding and snowboarding enthusiasts at the Columbia Mall.

For the past two years, Tyler served as the youngest member on the Board of the Serenity Center in Columbia, MD, where he implemented new anti-sexual-harassment behavior standards, ran late-night meetings, and inspired young participants to dig into their pockets to give back, effectively doubling basket donations within a very short time. He also worked closely with the Howard County Drug-Free Program, speaking at local high schools. Assisting others with recovery from addiction was his passion, and he was making plans to obtain a degree in counseling.

Tyler was a fiercely loyal friend and a terrific and beloved son, brother and family member. In addition to his parents, Tyler leaves his sister Anna Eames Johnson, his maternal grandparents Bernard and Jean Ryan, devoted aunts, uncles, cousins and many, many friends.

Donations in his memory can be made to the Community Foundation of Howard County, Tyler Johnson Memorial Fund, 10630 Little Patuxent Parkway, Century Plaza, Suite 315, Columbia, MD 21044. Donors may also make memorial gifts online at www.cfhoco.org/give/donate/foundation. Please specify "Tyler Johnson" in the memorial field.

Words cannot express how much Tyler meant to me. During the dark times in life, Tyler was there, shinning his light and bringing a much needed smile to my face. I am sure you may not remember, but I was actually at your house a day in July after Tyler and my freshman year, when I got a phone call stating that my step-mom had lost her battle to cancer and I had to go say goodbye before they took her off life-support. Never have I ever felt such comfort from someone like Tyler gave me that day. Your son never left my side- He was my rock during one of my darkest moments. The world has lost a wonderful person. I am so sorry for your loss, so sorry for the world's loss. May you find peace and comfort soon knowing your son will live on in so many of our hearts and thoughts. My love to you all.

We did not know your son, but just like thousands of people across the United States we mourn his passing just the same. His life accomplishments tell the story of a life well lived and his compassion for others goes way beyond his years. It seems his legacy is destined to live on. I know your Tyler has a special place in heaven. I hope his memory gives you peace and that God gives you the strength you need at this time.

To the family of Tyler: my heart aches at the thought of another young life gone too soon. I lost my son not too long ago and understand how you all are feeling. It will be a hard road ahead - but there is hope. You will miss him every minute of every day. As a grieving mother, all I can offer you is my prayers.

I will miss his radiant smile + openness. He was such an enthusiastic support of our Serenity Center, our board, and his many family and friends. He was always willing to greet me with a "Tyler Hug". My favorite picture of him was taken on Valentine's Day last year when he and Kaylynn sat on our grey couch during our open house for our board and other Serenity friends. I don't see how he can be replaced, and know that he will be with all of us in spirit.
