Mr. Clifford Eli "Greeny" Green, of Thurmont, entered eternal rest on his 85th birthday, December 17, 2012. He was the loving husband for 60 years to the late Evelyn Lorraine Green who died on Dec. 6, 2009.|
Born in Lewistown in the same house where he lived his entire life, he was the only child of the late Charles Eli and Anna Elizabeth Gaugh Green.
Greeny retired after 24 years as a painter with the Montgomery County School Board.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy.
An avid hunter, he was a lifetime member of the NRA. He looked forward to his annual hunting trips to Wyoming, a trek he made from 1961 until 1995. He often traveled with his buddy and good friend, George Washington Brown, Jr. of Littlestown, PA.
Greeny also enjoyed fishing and taking trips to the Eastern Shore, especially Tilghman Island. He loved nature, bird watching, Bluegrass music and was an accomplished master woodworker, often making great furniture pieces. In his younger years, he loved flying and had his own pilot's license. Greeny often would be seen flying in and out of the former airport on U.S. 15 North and Hansonville Road.
He was a devoted member of "The Romeo's" (Retired Old Men Eating Out), and ate breakfast daily at Bollinger's Restaurant in Thurmont. According to his children, "he was a member in good standing."
He is survived by his three children and their spouses,James Green and wife, Maureen, of Rice, VA.; JoAnne Cottrell and husband, Richard, of Frederick; and Linda Reichard, and husband, Steven, of Charleston, SC.; five grandchildren, James Green, Jr., and wife, Amanda, Kimberly Coker, David Wood, Matthew Wood and wife, Kaitlyn, and Michael Wood, and wife, Nicole; eight great- grandchildren, and several sisters-in-law.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A Celebration of Life service for Greeny will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 20 from Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont, with the family receiving friends from 10 a.m. until service time.
