Thomas Luther Browning died Tuesday, February 19 at his home in Mt. Airy after an extended illness. Born July 23, 1945, he was the son of William H. and Marianne E. Browning. He is survived by his daughters, Melissa Browning Lizmi of Mt. Airy and Sarah Elizabeth Browning of Shoreline, WA; grandchil- dren Jack Thomas Lizmi, Julia Marianne Lizmi and Nolan Browning Lizmi. He is also survived by brothers, William H. Browning, Jr. of Mt. Airy and Robert F. Browning of Olney and one uncle, Earle Lynwood Browning of Mt. Airy.|
Tom was a graduate of Frederick High School Class of 1963 and went on to major in Agricutural Economics at the University of Maryland. He continued his studies at Pennsylvania State University. After completing his Master's Degree, he began his career at the U.S. Department of Agriculture with the Extension Service at the University of Minnesota. While there he completed his studies for the Ph.D. degree in Agricultural Economics. He returned to the area in 1975 to work in the USDA's Agricultural Research Service and as natural resource policy and program analyst and advisor to the Farm Service Agency Administrator, the position from which he retired in 2003.
Following retirement, Tom became very active in the Frederick County Farm Bureau, using his professional skills to become a very suc- cessful leader of their legislative committee for several years and then President of the organization. He continued to be active in the organization until the time of his death. The Frederick County Commissioners appointed Tom as the farm representative in drafting the documents for the charter government plan for the county.
Tom was a lifelong avid and skillful hunter and outdoorsman and developed a large network of friends and close associates scattered all over the country and even into Canada.
A Memorial Celebration of his life will be held at Linganore Winery on Glissan's Mill Road this Saturday at 11 a.m.
