Greensboro - Harold Dennis "Hal" Miller, 78, died September 20, 2013, at Wesley Long Hospital.
An 11:00 a.m. funeral service will be held at Forbis and Dick North Elm Street Chapel on Tuesday, September 24, 2013. Interment will follow at Westminster Gardens.
Mr. Miller was born near New Market, Frederick County, Maryland, on April 5, 1935, to the late Harry Dennis and Vada Mae Wilhide Miller. He graduated from Frederick High School in Frederick, Maryland, and served at Fort Knox in the U.S. National Guard where he earned a citation for marksmanship. Hal was a volunteer fireman and a charter member of the New Market Fire Department. He moved to North Carolina in 1962 to take a managerial position with Aetna Finance and later moved to Signal Finance. In 1974 he became the credit manager at Southern Foods Service in Greensboro and served in that position for 33 years, retiring in 2007.
Hal, who was known as Bucky to family and friends in Maryland, loved baseball which he played in high school and for the New Market team. After moving to Greensboro, he played softball for a few years before becoming an ASA umpire, which he did for 25 years, and a member of the National Association of Sports Officials. As a member of the Optimist Club, he earned the Distinguished Lieutenant Governor Award after serving in that capacity. As a civic-minded person, he worked with Greensboro Beautiful to make school campuses more appealing. Hal also loved gardening and traveling, especially riding his motorcycle on the Blue Ridge Parkway. He traveled to many locations in the U.S., and he took a 17-day tour of Europe in 2001.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Bertha Lee Reed Miller. In addition, he is survived by daughter, Sandy Stone (husband Mike) of Oak Ridge, daughter Susan Miller of Jamestown, son Steve Miller of Greensboro, granddaughters Anna and Caroline Miller, step-grandchildren Jason (wife Carrie) and Amber Stone, step-great-grandson Zachary Stone, sister Doris Lare of Thurmont, Maryland, and numerous nieces and nephews.
