He served in the United States Navy Reserves as a Petty Officer First Class during the Korean War era.

Don began his professional career as a Window Dresser at many major department stores. He was a skilled artist, employed by the B & O Railroad. He also worked construction at his father's construction firm. For a time he worked as an Graphic Artist with the Review and Herald Publishing Association in the Art Department. Later in his career, he worked as a Sales Representative for Worthington Foods and with the Matrix Company in the sales of health foods and health related products.

Don remained an artistic painter throughout his life. He was an avid fan of the Baltimore Ravens and Orioles. Don enjoyed singing and was a member of a quartet in Baltimore and was a member of the Review and Herald Men's Chorus. He worked as a Youth Director with the Pathfinders Scouting Group. Above all, he especially loved spending time with his family.

Don was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Deborah Mangum and husband, Nathan of Hagerstown; his sister Patricia Fiol-Morrill and husband, William Kelso, Jr. of Timonium, Md., and by four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Fiol-Fraley; his grandson, Derrick Niewiadomsky; and his sister, Shirley Smith.
