Command Sergeant Major (RET) Thomas C. Keller, 84, known as Pete to friends and family, passed away on February 3, 2014, at Frederick Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was the husband of Doris F. Keller, whom he married on April 7, 1951. Pete was born January 10, 1930 in Buckeystown, Maryland, the son of the late Havery and Halga Keller.|
Pete was an Army veteran who served in the Korean War and retired after more than 30 years of service. While in the U.S. Army, Pete served in the Reserves, and as a civilian employee at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick. In the years following his retirement, Pete continued to serve the community. A lifelong resident of Frederick County, Pete was an avid golfer, a collector of coins and memorabilia, and a dedicated Redskins fan.
It was his family that gave him the most joy. Pete leaves behind four children: Terry Keller of Frederick, Thomas L. Keller of New York, Donna Burtner and husband Steve of Jefferson, and Diana "Sis" Crane and husband Tom of Middletown. Pete is survived by seven grandchildren: Andie, Abby, Chad, Erin, Alex, Tyler and Casey; and four great-grandchildren: Nathen, Grace, Juliana and Noah. He also leaves behind two brothers: Charles and Jerry Keller, and three sisters: Lauretta, Patsy and Gloria. Pete also leaves behind many deeply loved nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Henry Keller.
In the same spirit of his life of community service, in death Pete chose to donate his body for the purpose of medical and scientific research. A memorial service for Pete will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2014, 1:30 PM at Buckeystown United Methodist Church, 3440 Buckeystown Pike, Buckeystown, MD 21717 will beheld for family and friends to honor his memory.
