Dear Melissa and Family: The Hassler Family sends our deepest condolances on the loss of Joe. Joe and I became great friends at Magruder High School and beyond. Joe was always the consumate educator and administrator in his later years of teaching. God has a plan yet unveiled for taking Joe so soon and it's all our hopes and prayers that he will be at peace in the Garden of the Gods in Heaven as he was on earth.

Melissa, I am SO very saddened to know this! I met Joe at least once. A fine man he was, indeed. I have a million Irishman jokes up my sleeve, but Joe was the REAL DEAL; as was his love for you and your children. I am so, so sorry.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
(Irish: May his soul be at God's right hand.)

This is a colossal loss. There are just not enough words to express how deeply this saddens me. On a personal note Joe took a lot of time out of his schedule and personal interest in my career goals as a mentor at Wootton. Whenever my grad program got impossible and others insisted I just quit, Joe's words of encouragement helped to keep me focused and forge ahead. We were very lucky at Wootton to have him with us for the time we did. My sincere condolences to Joe's family. I was blessed to have known and have been able to work with him.

One of the greatest. There are not too many people I accredit for helping construct my own morality and understanding of this world. This man believed in my family against rumors without judgement, and passed his willingness to have an open heart through many of my siblings. This man had brilliance in his ability to teach outside the classroom to say the very least. I have lived a better life because of him. I am privileged to have known him and how fast he could sling a frisbee with pristine accuracy across the field with me at lunch time. Thank you for being a part of my life Mr.DuBoyce!

Mr. Duboyce was an amazing teacher. He made Magruder HS bearable for me because I knew I'd have someone to talk to. He was always in my corner and many times gave me some advice that I passed on to my own students when I became a teacher. I often checked in with him even when I didn't have class with him that semester because he really was a driving force for me. One moment that I will always remember, was when he gave me a St. Michael prayer card because he knew I was Catholic, but also he said "never hurts to have someone watching over you when you need it". I kept it in my backpack everyday after that. I will miss him terribly. My sincere condolences to his family, colleagues, and students. I will light a candle in church for him and for his family.

We have many teachers in our years of education. Most come and go. Joe DuBoyce, or Joe DB, has stayed with me. I had this man twice a day every day my senior year of high school for AP Euro and AP US. 14 years after sitting in his classroom, a college and masters degree later, I still refer to him as my favorite teacher. Whenever someone says to me "you have unique handwriting" I can't help but tell them the story of how my favorite teacher told me I could never submit anything anonymously and he could not for the life of him read my handwriting. (To which I replied, well, I can't read yours either Joe DB, so that makes us even.) His passion could be seen in his handwriting--large, largely illegible, and all over the white board, which he'd clean with a sleeve because he couldn't find the eraser--and his profuse sweating, even if it was 40 degrees outside. His pearls of wisdom, or DuBoyce-isms, made history come alive and made us roll with laughter. We ended up keeping a record of these pearls of wisdom (Russia = trash can, crossing the rubicon!) and secretly memorialized them on a banner which we unveiled to him at the end of the school year in the social studies office. He was nearly moved to tears. But he was no pushover. When he gave me a 4 on my practice AP Euro exam, I asked him what I could do better. We both ended up agreeing that I simply had a better shot at a 5 on US than in Euro. When I pulled out a 5 on both, there was no one I was more excited to tell and no one who was prouder for me. Thank you for a truly unforgettable educational experience, Mr. DuBoyce. Thank you for being that teacher who inspired inside and outside of the classroom, who gave your students everything you had to give every single day. You may be gone but you will never and could never be forgotten. You made me a history major but more importantly you showed me what it meant to have passion and show compassion. I hope I will make you proud.

I am so saddened by this. He taught me at Magruder HS and had more passion for teaching and history than anyone else. Condolences to the family.

There are just not enough words to express how deeply this saddens me. On a personal note Joe took a lot of time out of his schedule and personal interest in my career goals as a mentor to me at Wootton. I always appreciated how Joe was always able to see the best where many of us dread the worst. I feel blessed to have known Joe and have had the honor to work with him.

I had the privilege to work with Mr. DuBoyce at Blake High School in the fall of 2004. He was a wonderful department chairman, teacher and mentor. I genuinely liked him, admired his easy rapport with his students and came to respect him very quickly. I am deeply saddened to learn of his passing. My condolences to his family, friends and to his students and colleagues.

You always think you can go back and say "Hello"...Mr DuBoyce was my favorite teacher. His enthusiasm for what he did was unparalleled and he took a genuine interest in his students. He was the one who sparked my interest in civic engagement and I wish I had the chance to thank him now. Mr. DuBoyce, the world has truly lost a light. You will be so missed.

Joe was one of the funniest and nicest guys I have ever met, ever. One of the greatest examples of what a Father should be. It was an honor to had him in my life at one time. I have not spoken or seen him in many years and I am still deeply saddened by his loss.

My most difficult cases in recent years were with students Joe was looking after. He always listened, offered good advise and made me feel better about these challenging issues. He also had some funny stories about having kids. Best advise to me while pregnant with my 2nd was "Just make it to the hospital!" Apparently one of his own children was born on the side of 270! Joe will be missed terribly at Wootton. It was a privilege to work with him.

Mr. DuBoyce was my favorite teacher in high school. His passion for teaching and his love of history made me want to be a teacher. Over my 18 years as an elementary teacher, I often hope I'm making the difference in my student's lives that he made in mine. Whenever my students talk about high school, I tell them how much I hope they have that one teacher who helps change their life. Thank you Mr. DuBoyce for making a difference. My condelences to your family.

My deepest condolences. I had the privilege of teaching with Joe for four years at Blake HS about a dozen years ago. His kindness, goodness, and uncommon decency will never be forgotten.

I remember so well, some thirty years ago as Social Studies Resource Teacher, interviewing Joe to teach at Magruder High School in Rockville, Maryland. Since he had broken his leg, he had to have his roommate carry him over snow drifts to get to the interview. How could you not hire someone under those circumstances? He was incredibly funny, totally dedicated, and an inspired educator. He cared so much. So many great memories. I am deeply saddened by his passing.
