JAY TRACHMAN Obituary

Long-time radio consultant and personality Jay Trachman passed away peacefully on November 28, 2009, surrounded by loved ones, having ultimately succumbed to pneumonia brought on by lung cancer. Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1939, Jay moved to Fresno in 1969 and worked as a disc jockey at KFRE, where he worked under the name Jay "Jaybird" Stone. He published a weekly newsletter for more than 35 years named "Fruitbowl", and later called "One to One". A weekly Torah study group at Temple Beth Israel helped satisfy his love for discourse, and kept him happy and his spirits high. Jay was a regular participant in the activities of his Jewish community, and taught those traditions to his children with joy. Jay is survived by his wife Jeanne; his three children, Leigh, Joy, and William; his stepdaughters, Elisa and Laurel; his grandchildren, Victoria, Matthew, Michael and Sophie; his mother, Erma; brother, Robert and many cousins. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. A Memorial Service will take place at Temple Beth Israel, in Fresno, on Wednesday, December 2, 2009, 1:00 p.m. The Temple is located at 6622 N. Maroa Avenue. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jay's name are very much appreciated to either (1) Americans for Safe Access (safeaccessnow.org); (2) Equality California (ecqa.org); (3) or a charity of your choice. I never got to meet him but I did through my mom, Joy. She tells me that he would have loved me and I would love him. His memory lives on

Jay's never ending defense of personality in the business we both love - radio - will always be appreciated. His prep sheet was a huge help to me and many other radio personalities. I was saddened when he stopped the service and even sadder when I learned of his passing. If everyone touched by his work were to leave accolades, it would fill a book.

Thank you, Jay. God be with you.

I knew Jay when I was childhood friends with his dear daughter Leigh. He always wanted us to have fun. He took us on a plane (he was the pilot) over Fresno which was thrilling as a child! We visited his radio station, took a bus trip to visit him when he lived in sacramento (& he took us to "Sams"), we went to Temple with him...we just always enjoyed being with him. I haven't seen him for many years, but I will always have my memories of what a sweet, fun man he was.

Jay came into my life in 1975, back when he was just starting "Fruitbowl" and remained an influential mentor and confidant for all of the years since.

I was in Bakersfield and he was in Fresno. I worked for him as Country Editor of "One To One" and he worked for me at KEEN, San Jose.

To say that we were friends and I loved him would be an understatement.

He, his ideas, his values and so much more that he gave to me, live on in all of us who knew him.

Jay touched thousands of personalities around the world for more than three decades.

The same ethic Bill and Janet Gavin brought to music, Jay Trachman brought to the art and science of personality radio.

His concepts are heard all around the world even now!

Jay enjoyed being enthusiatic about life! In 2007, I decided to visit the annual Hanukkah Bazaar at TBI. When Jay learned it was all new to me, he dropped what he was doing and gave me the tour. It was a nice thing to do! My heartfelt condolences to the family.
