Dr. James R. Brownell moved to Fresno in 1969, to join the Soils Faculty at California State University, Fresno. He retired in 1992, and moved to his home in Cambria with his wife Dolly. During his time in Fresno, he was a decorated professor, mentor to many, and an active agricultural consultant. Jim passed away in his sleep on Monday, November 4, 2013, after a brief but valiant battle with liver cancer. He was surrounded by his family and had been visited by numerous friends in the last week of his life. He is survived by all four of his children, their spouses, 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A Celebration of "Dr. Dirt's" Life will be held at the Cambria Veteran's Hall on Saturday, November 30, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. The family asks that any Remembrances may be made in the form of donations to Cambria Greenspace, Piedras Blancas Lightstation; or Friends of the Elephant Seals.
