I was searching for the obituary of an old friend and happened upon this one. What an inspirational woman she was! I wish I had had the opportunity to know her.
My condolences to all who knew & loved her.

Marthann and I have been away from Fresno since 1982, but for 12 years prior to our departure, we were honored to count Anna and her family among our dearest friends. During Suerie's weekly bassoon lessons at our home with me, Anna regaled Marthann in delightful and fascinating discussions of every and any imaginable topics. We remember with great pleasure a memorable Thanksgiving dinner with the Levin family at their mountain retreat.
Anna was among the most remarkable human beings we have ever known. The world is a better place for her having passed through it and we are honored to have been among her friends.

I'm sorry to be so late in responding, but as we get older, time flies by faster.
I first met Anna in 1957. As a young Assistant Professor of Chemistry, I felt confined by science and desired to expand my repertoire into the humanities. On the advice of the late Professor Phil Walker, I joined the cast of the late Professor Alan D. Button's production of William Saroyan's new play, "The Cave Dwellers," which was performed at the White Theatre in downtown Fresno. I played the role of a bear trainer and fed sugar cubes to Jess Flores, who played the bear. This cracked me up, and I couldn't help laughing, which enraged Anna, who was always the serious professional.
I saw Anna numerous times since then. Her first husband, Manny Levin was our family's primary physician (my first wife, Inge, and later my present wife, Laurie) until his death on May 7, 1977. She invented her process of bonding precious metals to porcelain in the laboratory behind my office, McLane Hall 159. In return she gave Laurie and me one of her bowls, which we still cherish. Our memories of Anna remain deep and meaningful. February 26. 2013

Dear Robert,
excuse me for getting in touch so late. Jack Fortner told me about Anna's passing and the obituary in the Bee. Your/her story is so intensely human. I am moved at the reading of it..
Bob, I am thinking of you and hope that life has not lost its luminosity... Here is a link that might bring you a modicum of comfort:

I never knew Anna, just happened to be looking through the obituaries. She went through a lot as many did with the holocaust. She seemed to be a remarkable woman.
May you rest Anna in peace now. God be with you

Anna ran the costume shop at CSUF, when I was there in the early-mid 80s. I knew she was Holocaust survivor, but had no clue about the incredible details of her life. I remember she was a taskmistress, definitely, but also quick to help any student who asked- and she had a wicked sense of humor! I still remember (and always smile when I do!) her refrain every time somone headed for a sewing machine- "DON'T Touch the Bernina!" Dr. Ware- I don't know if you'll remember me- but all my sympathy- you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Laura Robinson

The California Legislature recognized Anna Levin-Ware in April of 2006 in a volume honoring California Holocaust survivors. The essay in that volume gives additional detail about her experiences in the camps.

I never met Anna Maxwell Levin-Ware but read her beautiful obituary, and was struck by her amazing life. She overcame such adversity and managed to have a positive outlook on life by focusing on the good things. We could all learn from that. She was a remarkable woman and she lived a remarkable life.
Thank you so much for sharing her amazing story.

Anna was always welcoming when my siblings and I visited the ranch and went to their home to play with their children. I miss those time. Going to the ranch was like going to camp and never being homesick!
I miss those days!

I am amazed at your life, Anna. I had no idea what you went through.
I remember your beautiful accent as you taught me to sew in my Costumes class at Fresno State in the early '90s.
My deepest sympathies to you, Dr. Ware. I vividly remember how much both of you were in love with each other.

Once, at some last minute in the costume shop, she handed me a needle, laughing, "I always keep a few hidden for the dark hour." I didn't know then that she was a survivor, but learned later when she spoke in schools with Inga Kauffman. As a Holocaust historian, I've thought about that moment often, and what dark hours informed her humor.

Mrs. Ware was one of the people who helped me to fall in love with the art of stage performance. As a young singer at CSU Fresno, she designed the costumes for every production that I was in and helped give me the confidence to go on stage and shine in whatever marvelous costume she had created. You will be deeply missed, Mrs. Ware. I will always treasure the time that I had to spend with you and the remarkable impact that you've had on us all. Blessings to the family. My most sincere condolences.

I've always been in awe of the remarkable woman I knew first as Suerie's mom and later as the indispensable queen of the CSUF costume shop, but it wasn't until reading the extraordinary journey of her life here that makes me so deeply mourn the loss we've all suffered. And as well, smile in remembrance of that wonderful Polish-inflected voice of hers. Robert, Suerie - we share the loss of your wife and mother, and offer our condolences even as we remind ourselves of our great fortune in having known Anna. With best wishes from the Marsdens - Les, Diane and Maxfield.
