CHRISTOPHER PURTZ Obituary

Christopher, age 25, was a scholar-athlete whose passion for sports and travel took him all over the country and world. In school he was a class president, student of the year and an honors student. He attended a leadership program at Stanford University and played in the Cal-Florida Bowl. Chris graduated from Clovis West as the All-County Defensive Player of the Year and was an All State linebacker. He attended University of California, Berkeley on scholarship and played football for Cal, earning bowl rings at the Las Vegas and Pacific Life Bowls and a 2006 Pac 10 Championship ring. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at Cal. He traveled to Europe four times and lived in downtown Boston, Santa Barbara, Denver and San Diego. Chris was a huge Red Sox fan and worked at Fenway Park. Chris will be remembered as a leader, a fierce competitor with a relentless drive to achieve. He was loved by many and inspired all those around him. Chris has been and always will be a source of pride for those who knew him well. We pray for peace for our dear Christopher, that he will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. He is survived by parents, Harvey and Leslie Purtz; his brother Eric; grandfather, Ed Purtz of Lynnfield, Ma.; aunt, Laurie McNeilly of Visalia; uncle, Larry Lucken of Seattle; and many relatives in Boston.

Chris,

We still talk about the good old days when you and Erik played soccer and baseball, coached by me and your dad. The Michael Jordan basketball camp hosted by Rod Higgins, and both you and Erik get called out by MJ to shoot hoops with him. You remain in our hearts.

Hey man,
I´ve never written since your passing, though I´ve known for quite sometime. Guess I always felt weird. We talked when we were 22 or so, but fell off after that. Even still you were so positive and honestly just inspirational. I see old friends on here like Randy and Erik and remember those amazing times when we were kids. You and your family´s kindness will never be lost on me nor will your friendship. Rest in peace man.

C.P.,

There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about you. To this day I find myself sharing memories of the time spent with you. You had the rare ability to inspire those around you to be the best they could be. A natural born leader. When I was at the lowest point in my life you were there to tell me I was gonna succeed in life, and everything would be okay. When I was down and out with little to call my own, you were there for me. You gave me friendship in a time when I was lost and alone. Can't wait to see you again big guy...

P.S. Thanks for helping out my brother when he needed it.

CP... As I take time to look back at all the moments we shared from our days at Cal, You are one of a kind. Never have I came across a guy that had the character as you did. You made my college experience a blast. From when I first arrived at Cal you took me under your wing and looked out for me in every way possible and I am so thankful for the times you went out of your way to help me get used to the Berkeley way of life. The laughter you brought in my life has not been matched by any person on this earth. Although you are gone your memory is strong in my life. I am so thankful that I did have the opportunity to know you. Cant wait to be laughing with the crew again someday.. Miss you bro!

Brother,
forgive me for taking so long to say these words to you. First and foremost I miss you. I know I was never the brother I should have been to you, and for that I asked for forgiveness over your coffin, and I will always feel a sense of sorrow until I receive it in person. You were such and amazing person. You were robbed of so much, and your passing has stood as a testament to how unfair this life can be. It never ceases to amaze me just how cruel this world can be. But you brought so much light into it. You showed me just how talented one person could be. You were my younger brother, yet I looked up to you for your confidence and leadership along with so many other admirable traits that I so desperately wished I could match. I can hardly think of one thing that ever scared or intimidated you. Mom, Dad, and I were so proud of you. So much brilliance lost in such a cruel manner. I always remember you for the person you were...a leader, an athlete, a scholar. But most importantly my one and only brother. I pray that you are the first to greet me in heaven. I love you and will always miss you until our Lord sees fit to reunite us.

To my dear friend Chris,

From the moment I met you at summer football camp at Kastner I knew you were a very special person with great ambition. On the football field you brought a level of intensity and passion to the game that I had never seen before. And what stood out to me even more is that off the field your humility and kind-hearted and fun-loving personality really characterized what a great person you truly were.
All throughout middle school and high school I looked up to you so much. You embodied everything I wanted to be, both on the football field and in the classroom.
The spring before my senior year in football at Clovis West I decided to change my number from 34 to 3 to show my appreciation, admiration and respect for all that you did for me and all that you accomplished.
You must have put a good omen on that number because I was named Defensive player of the year in the conference in 2003, just like you were in 2002. I know it made you proud that I wore that number because every time we would see each other or talk to each other you would always mention how proud you were of me and how happy you were that I took that number.
I remember at the end of my senior year in high school when you were already up at Cal you came to visit Fresno one weekend. We talked about the possibility of me playing football in college, but it looked pretty bleak at the time. You told me you would talk to the coaches up at Cal and you would see what you could do. Not even a week later I got a call from you saying that you had set up a meeting with the coaches up at Cal and the next weekend I was up there visiting the campus and talking with the coaches. You showed my family and I all around Berkeley and really stuck your neck out there for me, and I am so grateful to you for doing that, and I will never forget it!!
You were a very loyal friend with a kind heart and that is something that's so hard to come by these days. I pray that you have found peace up in Heaven, and may God bless you.

This is Uncle Larry. My first thought we I heard of your death is that I imagined the relief you had when you opened your eyes on the other side and heard Him say, "Welcome home, I love you and have been waiting for you", I know we will see each other again. This is just a breath, when we wake up on the other side we will all be together.

This took me so long to find the strength, to find the words, to say how much you mean to me Chris. I can remember every moment with you, and how you were able to make me feel as if I was the only person there. You had the ability to relate to people no matter what they talked about. You were truly one of Gods greats. I know that when it is my time you will welcome me with open arms the way you always did. I have so many fond memories and I miss you, I'm sure I always will.
Uncle Harvey, Aunt Leslie, and Eric my prayers every night have been for both you and Christopher.

To My Son,
Our Lord blessed us 25 years with a wonderful big strong son. I had the honor of assisting on your delivery and watching you take your first breath in this world. The beginning of a full and great life. I was so very proud watching from the sidelines as my gifted and talented son played football, baseball, soccer, basketball, and wrestled. Your many friends were happy to be a part of your life. I also was blessed with a good report card and not having to pay for college. My regret is that I was unable to help heal all the wounds. I will think of you every day until we meet again and I feel your strong embrace and see your strong smile with Christ, our Lord. I will cherish the last words you said, "I Love You Too Dad". In the blink of an eye,we will all be in heaven together, You, Me, Mom, and Eric. Until that time, I will love you forever.

My son knew Chris at Liberty Elementary. My son was in Special Ed, but Chris was always so kind to him--included him in things and treated him like normal. We moved away to Texas, but I've never forgotten that. I stumbled on this news today, and wanted to share a sweet memory with you. I lost my nephew 10 years ago at Chris' age--my sister treasures little stories like this & I hope you will too.

Leslie and Harvey,
It's been a month now and I still can't fully absorb all that has happened. I just know you two were great parents to him. He would never have accomplished all he did without your unending support. Harvey, I witnessed all the time you invested. Leslie, I have so many memories of little Boo boo. He embrassed life and lived it fully, a lot like his mom. I wish this never happened because seeing your pain is overwhelming. I want to be there so let me know what you need.

To the Purtz Family,
My cousin Chris will always hold a special place in my heart. I honestly can't look at a bowl of mashed potatoes without smiling and thinking of him fondly! He was a truly talented, sensitive, and charismatic person with many stories to share. He possessed that "it" factor that money cannot buy and many movie stars covet; I will continue to miss him but will be comforted by my knowledge that he is at peace in Heaven and looking down upon all of us.

Watching Chris grow up over the years, I was always amazed at his focus and how he didn’t stop until he won. I think of Chris’s passion, goal setting and focus and try to apply the same principles to my life. Playing for Cal and getting a job for the Red Sox just shows Chris was following his dreams. My favorite memory with Chris is in 2004 when the Sox made the famous comeback against the Yankees. We were at Fenway and just won and tens of thousands of Sox fans crowded the street and I turn and there was Chris jumping up and down screaming “we won, we won” and hi-fiving everyone. I will miss you Chris.

although you live so far away from us and we have missed so much of the children growing up together christoper was such a inspiration to my boys. i'll never forget the day when justin was starting football and the were handing out jerseys. they held up each shirt one at a time and let the kids go up and pick the one they were holding. when he held up the number 44 justin ran as fast as lightning and got it before any one else could. he was so proud to have the same number christopher wore. we would watch games on tv and he would yell " there's my cousin" every time we saw him. he told me recently that christopher was his hero. i'm so glad he was able to touch our lives in this way. we will miss him and always keep him in our hearts.

I will always hold Christopher near to my heart as a cherished nephew. I have so many good memories of him. I remember one of his visits to MA. We went to Canobie Lake Park in NH. At one of the booths there was a guy with a speed gun clocking how fast people could throw a baseball. Chris told the guy he could beat him. Christopher was about 13 years old at the time and he threw the ball at a speed of 91. Chris was smiling but, everone around him was in shock. A couple of people watching yelled sign him up. There are many memories of him. He was such a gifted and well rounded young man. I will miss him so much. I love you Christopher,

Dear Leslie, Harvey and Eric,

I am so terribly sorry to hear of the sudden death of your beautiful son, Christopher. Please know that our family stands alongside you during this dark time of sadness and loss. May you be sustained by the love you have for Chris and all that dwells in the quiet sanctuary of your hearts.

I fondly remember our early years in California, times spent by the swimming pool, school and extracurricular activities trying to keep our "rambunctious herd", safe and in check. The Purtz brothers were an integral part of whole with a zest and energy often unmatched by the others! What fun we had together.

Chris brought his own unique spirit and skill set to our neighborhood group. At five, he was a whirlwind of activity, freckly faced, cherubic with a winning and mischievious grin that could just melt the most hardened of hearts. He seemed to embrace all that was presented with unbridled enthusiasm. As all little boys so often are, I can imagine he was a source of great pride as well as complete frustration! But honestly, what an amazing dynamic spirit . Hold on to that.

I am so grateful for the early years spent together in friendship. I pray that you will all be sustained by your faith, the shared memories and the many stories that will come your way. We were all blessed to know and love Chris at some point in time and will celebrate the extraordinary gift of his life while he was here on earth.

With much love ,

Harvey and Leslie, I'm not sure if you remember us, but Allen & I used to live in your neighborhood near Palm and Sierra. We remember both of your beautiful boys playing outside on the front lawn and laughing about how Christopher was such a BIG little guy and would probably grow up to be a linebacker. Then both of our daughters ended up at Cal many years later and imagine how excited we were to see the name "Christopher Purtz" on the program at Cal football games in Berkeley. Small world. Our deepest condolences to you all. We are so sad for your loss.
