MYRNA JONES Obituary

Myrna Jean (White) Jones was born in Lemoore, Ca., on February 2, 1933. She passed away on December 2, 2009, in Clovis, Ca. Myrna graduated from Roosevelt High School in Fresno in 1951. She married her high school sweetheart, Richard Jones in 1952. The couple celebrated over 57 years together. While living in Turlock, Ca., Myrna earned her B.A. and M.A. in Education at California State University, Stanislaus. She was awarded a Doctorate in Education from Utah State University in 1987. Myrna and Richard took advantage of several career opportunities to experience life in other parts of the country. These included Fargo, ND, Ogden Ut., and Salem, Oh. Whether ice fishing at their cabin in Minnesota, skiing and camping in the mountains of Utah, or sailing their boat on Lake Erie, Myrna thoroughly embraced and enjoyed each new experience. She was a member of AAUW, CASA, the Sierra Women's Service Club and served as president of the YWCA in Salem, Ohio. Myrna also loved to travel outside of the country, and the couple spent numerous sabbaticals teaching and traveling in Sweden, New Zealand, Nigeria, Lesotho and Poland. In 2000 the couple retired to Prather, returning to their roots in the Fresno area. Despite being teased by her children as being "a couple of gypsies", Myrna valued her family above all, staying very close to her children and grandchildren. She will be missed for the tender calm love and practical approach to life that she shared with each of them. In addition to her husband, Richard, she is survived by her three daughters, Kathryn Owens and her husband Kyle; of Elk Grove, Ca., Susan Carcelli and her husband Larry of Ogden, Ut., and Carolyn Vellutini and her husband Frank of Elk Grove, Ca., eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Myrna had a way of making each of them feel a special connection to her, and they will miss her greatly. A Service celebrating Myrna's life will be held at the Memorial United Methodist Church in Clovis, Ca., on Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. BOICE FUNERAL HOME 308 Pollasky Avenue Clovis , Ca. Wow--
What can I say that would measure up to such an extraordinary person--she was a vibrant inspiration to me as a person in my teens and twenties. I always appreciated her knowledge, sense of humor, and frankness. She was a person I recognized as a Minnesota Round Lake "regular" and I remember her in their kitchen making snacks for my father and mother and me, with the smell of Dick's pipe in the background.. I particularly remember a night a of hot chili and beer at their table with a cold Minnesota night outside. They had copies of "Mother Jones" magazine in their bathroom and I think I took enough bathroom breaks to finish each issue. A visit from Dick and Myrna always meant a visit that I was welcome at, and I remember having many conversations with her out on the screened-in porch. She always encouraged me as a prospective teacher, and I think I was able to see adults other than my mom and dad in a different light because of her total accepting nature. This world will sorely miss the competitive spirit and and nature of her mission, and I wish Dick strength in his time of grief.

Thanks for the good logging memories Dick-
