On Saturday, January 25, 2014, Janice Goza passed away unexpectedly, though peacefully in her sleep, of natural causes. She had recently celebrated her 80 year birthday. Jan was a beloved friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing her, a devoted wife to Sam D. Goza, M.D., and a dedicated and loving mother to their four children. Jan was born on December 19, 1933, in Alton, Il. to Richard Ross and Blanche Sherwood. She was the youngest of three children. After graduation from high school in Alton, Jan enrolled in nurses training in nearby Saint Louis, Mo. Upon graduation, she set off for San Francisco, Ca. where she met her husband Sam. After their marriage, they spent two years in Fairbanks, Ak. while Sam fulfilled his service requirement to the United States Air Force, before returning to San Francisco. In 1964, they moved to Fresno to raise their growing family in a community that felt more like her midwestern home. Her grace, compassion, and joyful spirit were an inspiration to those who knew her. She dedicated countless hours to many worthwhile causes in the Fresno community over the years, especially the California Medical Association Alliance. With the CMAA, Jan proudly served on numerous local and statewide CMAA committees. She was local CMAA President from 1981 to 1982. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Eleanor; her spouse, Sam D. Goza, M.D.; and a son, Bruce Goza. She is survived by her brother, Richard Sherwood; her sons, Sam Goza and Ross Goza; her daughter, Mary Goza; her nephew, Bill Sherwood and wife Joan; her niece, Linda Thornton and husband Monte; her nephews, Rick Sherwood and Bob Sherwood and his wife Robin.
