Mrs. Manning, my dear hero.
Today I found out I waited too long to step into Petunia's Place in hopes of seeing you again. So many times I drived by the old location, once I went inside but "just missed you". I moved away and back again a few times. Recently I've been driving by the new location, had sometime today and went inside to ask about you.
You were such a joy to see after getting off the bus at Dailey or during summer break when my mom was still working on campus with all the staff. You encouraged me to read, you stood up for me to teachers that were less than what they should have been, and you showed me so much love.
You would let me push you around in your chair and then say "wanna race?" and take off faster than I would have thought possible. Definitely beating me time and time again.
I'm so sorry I never got to tell you what you meant to me growing up. How you gave me confidence when I had so little of it. I wish I could of told you about some of the great adventures I've been on and the places I've been. The people I've met. The wonder I've experienced.
You store is beautiful and I can see touches of your legacy throughout.
Hope to see you again in the Great Adventure,
Love Nic

A few minutes ago I read We Are in a Book! by Mo Willems and thought it would be fun to let Jean Fennacy know how much this book has meant since she and Debbie recommended it. Whenever I give it away, I get a new one for the shelf. Today I'm sending it to Pierre, SD to my great-nephews. In addition to being a really fun book, I just noticed on page 4 that Elephant's name is Gerald; that's my great-niece and nephews' great grandpa's name! So they'll read their grandpa's name, too. Debbie's expertise and love of literature will inspire for generations!
Still think of Debbie when I listen to Marv Allen on VPR and am honored to plant a memorial tree! Thanks to the family for staying in touch!

What a blessing our Debbie was to all the world she touched. We honored her at Fresno Pacific University in Visalia by sharing a bit of her life and her work. Language and Literacy students in the Teacher Education Program loved 'Literacy Learning in Room 4' and the stories, poems and songs she shared over many years of her work with teachers. Debbie will be remembered always by so many. May God bless our angel and all her family and friends.

From the Becker family, Mrs. Manning you were the best teacher we could ever ask for. You will be truly missed but you will live on forever in our hearts and we will always share with our kids, nieces and nephews the stories of how amazing it was to be taught by a teacher like you.

Warm Summer Sun
Warm summer sun,
Shine kindly here,
Warm southern wind,
Blow softly here.
Green sod above,
Lie light, lie light.
Good night, dear heart,
Good night, good night.

Debbie was truly as 'outstanding' an individual as she was a teacher. She will be greatly missed....
