Darlene Staats, 90, passed away in Boulder July 22.
She was born Darlene Bowyer July 11, 1927, in Kingman, Kan., the seventh out of eight children. As a young woman, Darlene performed trick riding and roping in rodeos around the country, first with her twin sister, Lorene, and later with her younger brother, Chub. She was a member of the Rodeo Cowboys Association for several years.
She married Lee Staats in Coats, Kan., in 1956. They moved to Brighton shortly afterward, living in a house on South Fifth Avenue where they raised two children, Neal and Betty Ann.
Darlene ran a day-care home for many years. During that time, Darlene made and sold Barbie doll clothing and furniture as well. When Lee passed away in 1985, Darlene became involved in arts and crafts. She was an expert at loom beading and at tatting and crocheting. She also did "scratch art." She had a booth at the Brighton Senior Center for several years at its annual craft show and sale. Darlene also taught classes tatting and beading at the senior center for many years.
Survivors include her son, Neal, and daughter Betty Ann; younger brother, Leland (Chub); and many nieces and nephews.
Darrell Howe Mortuary in Longmont handled the arrangements.
