It is with great sadness that the family of Jean Ellen Harley announces her passing after a long struggle with cancer and lupus Aug. 24.
Jean and her dogs resided in Brighton for many years. Jean will be lovingly remembered by her brother and sisters, Joyce Wilcox, Ann Studer, Lynn Cassidy (Thomas), James Harley (Joan) and Carolyn Harley-Brooks.
Her brothers, Robert and Don (Emma); a sister, Pamela; and many nieces, nephews and friends survive.
Jean was born in Sterling Dec. 25, 1946, the daughter of the late Harold and Kathareen Harley and remained in Sterling, attending St. Anthony Catholic School through high school and Northeastern Junior College.
Jean attended and graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley with a teaching degree in 1970. She began her teaching career in Holyoke and Flagler before teaching in the Denver area at Hulstrom, North Mor and Cherry Drive elementary schools. She taught special-education children and first grade until retiring in 2002 from the Adams County School District 12.
Jean loved gardening, especially roses and pansies. She was also an avid reader. For years she participated in the Scottish and Airedale Terrier rescue program and was the owner of four dogs at the time of her death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Riverside Cemetery in Sterling.
Memorial contributions can be made in her name to Cancer Research (www.cancer.org) or the Dumb Friends League (www.ddfl.org).
