Vera Lorraine Plasters, of Greeley, passed away March 11. She was born May 18, 1919, in Sleepy Eye, Minn., to Gustave and Helen (Lange) Schwieger.
In 1945, Vera was an adventurous young woman and a recent graduate from nursing school. She crossed the country by train and hitchhiked from Minnesota, where she was born and raised, to California, then back to Colorado. She found a job in Burns caring for a ranch owner's children. One day, while learning to ride a horse, she fell off and was picked up by a strong ranch foreman, William Plasters, who was immediately smitten by Vera. Vera was not quite ready to settle down and so she left William to travel to Wyoming. Undeterred, William followed Vera to again ask for her hand in marriage. Vera agreed, and she started her married life with William in Eagle.
She gave birth to her first son Paul, and then to her only daughter, Jana. But Vera missed Minnesota and encouraged William to move the family there and give it a try. Two more sons, Steven and David were born in Minnesota. Soon after, the family returned to the West again, first Wyoming where her youngest son, Mark was born, and finally back to the Brighton/Henderson area of Colorado. She enrolled her five children in the Zion Lutheran School and was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Brighton until William's passing in 1977.
Vera devoted herself to raising her children. Eventually, she returned to nursing as a registered nurse for several more years. Vera also took great pride in her garden, canning, and raising chickens and bees. Vera died at her home in Greeley at the age of 97.
Survivors include her daughter, Jana Plasters; sons, Paul Plasters and Mark Plasters; sister, Ruth Schwieger; brother, William Schwieger, grandchildren, Jason Plasters, Shanda Kos, Bronwyn Pollock, Stephanie Plasters, Carrie Plasters, Janelle Plasters, Breann Plasters, Lea Plasters Naccarato, and Cara Sims; and 11 great grandchildren, Morgan, Juliette, Bridget, Hayden, Michael, Deklan, Wyatt, Weston, Mary Kate, Ivy and Hill.
Her husband; sons, Steven Plasters and David Plasters; parents Helen and Gustave Schwieger; a sister Mildred Winch; a brother, Lloyd Schwieger; and great granddaughters Madeline and Julia Berg preceded her in death.
