Peter B.C.B. Ivory, M.D., 90, of Tallahassee passed away on October 12, 2017, at his home surrounded by his devoted wife and daughters. Dr. Ivory was the longtime Superintendent and Clinical Director of Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee, FL. He was born January 15, 1927 in St. Germans, Cornwall County, England. Peter was known for his keen wit, studious nature, striking humor, and upbeat personality.

He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps of the British Army (1946-1948) before graduating from St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, University of London, England in 1954 with medical degrees in Psychiatry and Neurology. Following his internship at Ipswich and East Suffolk Hospital in Ipswich, Suffolk, England, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1956, and completed his psychiatric residency at Warren State Hospital in Warren, PA.

He worked as a postgraduate fellow at Tulane University in New Orleans, and as a staff psychiatrist at Arizona State Hospital before residing in Florida. Ivory was selected to serve as Chief Executive Officer at Florida State Hospital due to his outstanding reputation in the mental health field and his exemplary work ethic. He served as Superintendent and Clinical Director of the Florida State Hospital from 1973 until his retirement in 2004. During Dr. Ivory's forty-three years of dedicated tenure to the State of Florida, he vastly advanced patient care through outstanding and progressive leadership. In 2010, he was elected as a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in recognition of significant contributions to Psychiatry.

Our beloved Peter kept us on our toes in the most delightful ways. He possessed great charm and insight, a wide variety of interests, a wealth of notable stories, and a lively intellect. He lent an ear to many and always offered thoughtful and sensitive responses, was consistently loving and peaceful, and enjoyed discussing "great thoughts". We will continue to be inspired by, and grateful for this wonderful gentleman, darling husband, and dear father.

Peter is survived by his wife, Eve (Ervin) Ivory; daughters Anne Ivory-McNally (John McNally), and Celeste Ivory; grandchildren, Jacob and Morgan McNally; and good friend, Fritz (Chris). He is preceded in death by his father, Charles A. Ivory, O.B.E.; mother, Kathleen (Bishop) Ivory; and son, Mark Ivory.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. on Friday, October 27, 2017 at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, 700 Timberlane Road, in Tallahassee, FL, with a reception to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to Engineers Without Borders.
