Spurgeon Franklin Johnson, of Chattahoochee, Florida, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday afternoon, December 10, 2012. He is survived by his wife Ann, with whom he celebrated 51 years of marriage in April of this year.
Spurgeon was born in Chattahoochee to W.F. (Bud) Johnson and Catherine (Fletcher) Johnson. He graduated as valedictorian from Chattahoochee High School, where he enjoyed high school sports and played baritone in the school band. He earned his
undergraduate and master's degrees from the Florida State University and was a veteran, who proudly served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy. Spurgeon was a child of God and was a lifelong active member of First United Methodist Church of Chattahoochee, where he faithfully attended Sunday school classes and worship services. He gladly served his church in many ways, including Chair of the Administrative Council, Chair of the Building Committee, and as a member of the Board of Trustees. He loved his church choir family, with whom he sang with for more than 40 years.
Following a brief time as partner in the Dyal-Johnson Insurance Agency, Spurgeon enjoyed a 30-year career at Florida State Hospital, where he retired in 1996 as the Director of the Admissions/Discharge unit. He also served as the Justice of Peace, for several years, in Chattahoochee.
Spurgeon loved his gardens and earned recognition as a Master Gardener. He
found joy in growing beautiful flowers and vegetables, that he generously offered
to so many throughout his community.
Spurgeon was loved dearly as a husband, dad, granddaddy, brother, father-in-law,
brother-in-law and good friend to so many. In addition to Ann, he is survived by his three children, Denise Yon (Terry) of Tallahassee, Florida; Marguerite Morgan (Gene) of Chattahoochee; Kevin Johnson (Hope) of Kennesaw, Georgia; his grandchildren, Billy Capece, Katie Capece, Fletcher Morgan and Kylie Johnson; two sisters, Emily Higdon (John) of Quincy, Florida, and Cat Binard (Don) of Jacksonville, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Spurgeon's life will be held at Chattahoochee First United
Methodist Church on Friday, December 14, at 2:00 PM, EST. Following the service,
family and friends are invited to the church fellowship hall to enjoy sharing
wonderful memories of Spurgeon as we celebrate his life.
Lanier-Andler Funeral Home, in Sneads, Florida, is in charge of arrangements.
