Ernest George Beinhart, Jr. died on April 26, 2013, at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, North Carolina.

George was born in Quincy, FL on July 21, 1925, son of Ernest George Beinhart, Sr. and Amy Baldwin Beinhart. After graduating from high school in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania in 1943 he joined the U.S. Navy where he served in the Pacific until the end of the Second World War. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1949 and then earned a Master's degree from North Carolina State and a PhD from Duke.
George worked for a brief time at R.J. Reynolds before embarking on a 34 year career as a plant physiologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He enjoyed several foreign agricultural development assignments, including Japan, Colombia, El Salvador, Bolivia and Saudi Arabia. His last assignment was in Hawaii where he retired in 1989 and remained until settling in Smithfield, N.C. in 2005.
George is survived by his wife of 64 years, Doris; four sons: Ernest of Silver Spring, MD; Geoffrey and wife Debbie, of Dayton, OH; Roger and wife Loraine of Bowie, MD; Eric and wife Mary of Alexandria, VA; 10 grandchildren: Shannon Ivey and husband Robert, Hank Mellichamp, George, Elizabeth, Vicki, Anna, Amy, Corey, David, and Eric Beinhart; one great-grandchild: Arwyn Ivey; sisters-in-law Jean Munroe and Patricia Faulconer and brother-in-law The Reverend (Ret.) Richard Corry; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Amos and Edward Beinhart, as well as his daughter, Jean Beinhart Mellichamp.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Smithfield on Sunday, April 28 at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the SECU Hospice House, or a charity of choice.
