Marjorie Carson

Marjorie Carson, 80, was born Feb. 21, 1933, and died Friday, March 8, 2013, at her home in Gadsden. As per her request, there will be no funeral. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Forrest Cemetery. On-site cremation will be provided by Morgan Funeral Chapel and Crematory.
Ms. Carson attended local schools, including Emma Sansom High School, Gadsden Business College and Gadsden State Community College. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Education and a Master's Degree in School Administration from the University of Alabama-Birmingham, where she was a member of Delta Kappa Pi and UAB Alumni.
She studied the Real Estate business, working five years as bookkeeper for Leslie C. King. She and her husband, who was a steelworker, operated a real estate sideline more than 40 years. Ms. Carson retired in 1992 with 30 year's service to Gadsden City Schools. Her tenure included bookkeeping/payroll, superintendent's office and math teacher at Disque Middle School the last 20 years.
Ms. Carson was a member of NEA, AEA and Retired Teachers of Etowah County. She held the office of treasurer with PAGE, Professional Association of Gadsden Educators, for several years. For more than 40 years, she was a member, Past President and elected Woman of the Year of the Dixie Belle Chapter of the American Business Women's Association.
She enjoyed books, travel, theater, sports and listening to her son sing like Elvis. After retirement, she volunteered at Riverview Regional Medical Center, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2760. She worked two years for the Council on Aging of Etowah County and was twice appointed a member of the Gadsden City Board of Education by Gadsden City Councilman Dawson Partee, District 6 (Alabama City). She finished an unexpired term and was reappointed.
Ms. Carson was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Allen A. Carson; her parents and her sister, Anita Myers, all of Gadsden. She is survived by her son, Dennis (Lynn) Carson of Gadsden; nephew, David Myers of Mobile; niece, (her little girl) Karen (Paul) Griffey of Attalla; nephew, (second son) Tim (Barbara) Johnson of Glencoe; several cousins; and her beloved cats, Smokey and Lady; and her great-nephews, Eric and Kyle Johnson, she claimed as her grandchildren.
