Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Village Chapel for Opal Ruth Stargel Baker, 84, Gadsden, who passed on May 5, 2014. The Revs. Jeff Thompson and Tommy Marshal will officiate. Village Chapel Funeral Home and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
Opal was a native and lifelong resident of Gadsden and was of the Pentecostal faith. She loved listening to her children and grandchildren perform gospel music. During her life she was a homemaker and later worked at General Time. She enjoyed visiting The Grand Ole Opry and spending time with her loved ones, especially at Christmas. Her life was a reflection of love and devotion to her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Alvie Roden Stargel; son, John Baker; sister, Barbara Britt; brother, Jerry Stargel.
She is survived by her daughters, Sarah (Terry) Freeman, Shirley Thompson, Gail (Michael) Thompson; sons, Bud (Judy) Baker, Richard (Christi) Baker; 10 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Steven Thompson, Jeff Thompson, Jeffery Thompson, Chris Baker, Cal Smith and Stephen Weed.
Honorary pallbearers will be Chase Lee, Michael Thompson and Terry Freeman.
The family wishes to express a special thanks to Amedisys Hospice, Lindsey Horton and Missy Pedersen for such wonderful care and support given to our mother and family.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 this evening at the funeral home.
