Funeral services for Ferron "Pete" Payne, 88, of Gadsden, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at Crestwood Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Abbott officiating. Burial will be in Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Funeral Home is in charge of services.
Mr. Payne died Sunday, August 24, 2014, at his home with his loving family.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Carlotta Norton Payne; one daughter, Melanie Payne of Gadsden; and two sons, Craig Payne, also of Gadsden, and Mark Payne from Lacey's Spring, Alabama. Grandchildren: Stephen Payne, Jessica Clayton, Alexa Payne, Stephanie (Justin) Holmes and Jonathon Payne. One great-grandchild, Max Payne; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
A longtime resident of Gadsden, Mr. Payne was a native of Cherokee County, Alabama, and was preceded in death by his mother, Sally Sewell Payne; and four siblings.
Mr. Payne was an avid fisherman. He worked at Republic Steel Corporation for more than 40 years. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the United States Navy.
Mr. Payne was a member of James Memorial Baptist Church, where he served the Lord in many capacities, including singing in the choir and serving as a deacon.
Honorary pallbearers will be: all family, friends, church family and fellow Bass Fishermen.
The family will accept flowers or donations to in "Pete's" honor.
The family would like to thank Amedisys Hospice and all of the loving caregivers who helped them during his lengthy illness.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from noon until the time of service.
