Funeral services will be at 5 p.m. today at Collier-Butler Chapel for Marion Smith Abernathy, 83, Southside, who died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009. Bill Drummons and Lauil Thompson will officiate. Burial will be at Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery, Southside. Collier-Butler directing.
Mrs. Abernathy was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Abernathy; parents, Dan and Lillie Smith; great-grandson, Ryder Akins; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Mrs. Abernathy was born and raised in Southside. She was a lifelong member of Southside Baptist Church. She graduated from Southside High School, was a cheerleader and Miss Southside High School.
She is survived by her children, Sue (Jack) Price, Southside, Linda (Jim) Vascoe, Southside, Jimmy Abernathy, Southside, Mickey Abernathy, Tallahassee, Fla., and Penny Abernathy, Southside; grandchildren, April (Steve) Pruitt, Alison Snyder, Danny (Jennifer) Abernathy, Stephanie Abernathy and Kimberly Abernathy; brother, A.W. (Jean) Smith; sisters, Betty Hart, Katie (Joe) Thompson and Elouise Gulledge; eight great-grandchildren; two stepgrandsons; one stepgranddaughter; five step great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Danny Abernathy, Harold Abernathy, Randy Gulledge, Harry Gulledge, Steve Pruitt and Austin Snyder.
A special thank you from the family to Drs. Ayers, G. Patel, Robinson and the ninth-floor south nurses at Gadsden Regional Medical Center and special nurses, Linda and Andria.
The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home.
