Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Crestwood Chapel for Mrs. Virginia Abney, 92, of Tucker, Ga., formerly of Gadsden, who died Saturday. The Rev. Gerald Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Crestwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Abney was a lifelong educator. She began her teaching career at Emma Sansom, moving to Gadsden State Community College when it opened in 1965, and retired in 1977. After retirement, she and her husband continued the ministry to foreign students enrolled in the language program. She was a faithful member at Dwight Baptist Church and later Paden Baptist Church. She influenced many lives in her family, the local community, as well as around the world.
Mrs. Abney was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Howard "Luster" Abney; parents, Lewis and Etta Sterling; great-granddaughter, Kaidence Elise Burris; sisters, Marjorie Braswell, Barbara Wilborn and Lerah Tyson.
She is survived by daughters, Belinda (Marvin) Roye, Karen (Robert) Coleman and Virginia "Ginie" (Timothy) Anthony; grandchildren, Keith (Brandy) Roye, Scott (Mandy) Roye, Jonathan (Ronni) Roye, Trent (Lindsey) Anthony, Andrew Anthony, Autumn Anthony; eight great-grandchildren.
Donations may be made to Paden Baptist Church.
Special thanks to the staff of North Lake Gardens and friends at Paden Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6 until 8 p.m.
