Claude Radford Jr., born to the late Hattie Grant and Claude Radford Sr. on Aug. 6, 1926, departed this life on Tuesday afternoon May 2, 2012, at his home residence in the comfort of family and friends.
Before he was of age, he went to serve and fight for his country. He knew soldiers were in demand. He also knew it was time to help his mother and grandmother, for desperate times had hit this country. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 under the company X366. He served his country in World War II as a Steward Mate 1st Class.
He retired from Republic Steel after 40 plus years of service. He was a locomotive engineer supervisor. He was called "Guinea" by his co-workers. He received a four-year degree in electrical maintenance engineering and was a certified brick mason.
Claude was a member of Sweet Home United Methodist Church for over 60 years. He served in various capacities: president of Methodist Men, Sunday School treasurer and Methodist Men treasurer, member of the Methodist Men Choir, Finance Committee, Trustee Board, Class Leader and Nominating Committee. He received Man of the Year Award twice.
He also served on the Board of AARP, was a member of Retired Steelworkers Union, Neighborhood Watch and a member of Senior Citizens Organization.
His wife of 50 years, Ida Mae Radford, preceded him in death on Dec. 14, 1998.
To perpetuate his memory, he leaves behind four sons, Mr. Claude Radford III (Cathy), Scott AFB, Ill., Mr. Michael Radford (Della), Marietta, Ga., Mr. Howard Radford (Jeanette), Huntsville, and Mr. Dennis Radford (Katie), Huntsville; a loving daughter, Ms. Brenda Radford-Robinson, Gadsden; a special daughter, Barbara Powell, Gadsden; and a special cousin, Shirley Hawkins, Gadsden. He also leaves 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Ms. Patsy Ann Howard, Rockmart, Ga., and Ms. Jeanie Wyatt (Kirk), Bowden, Ga.; one brother-in-law, Mr. Connie Wyatt (Lucille), Bowden, Ga.; several nephews, nieces, cousins and many loyal friends.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Sweet Home United Methodist Church, 218 N. Sixth St. The Rev. Dedric Cowser will officiate. Burial will be in Rainbow Memorial Park. Adams-Buggs Funeral Service is directing.
