Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Village Chapel for James "Bird" Harper, 76, Gadsden, who died Thursday, June 14, 2012. The Rev. David Strahan will officiate. Burial will be in Cave Springs Cemetery. Village Chapel Funeral Home and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.

James was a member of Life Church Assembly of God. He was an avid sportsman and worked for the City of Gadsden at the Sports Complex for 11 years. Mr. Harper retired from Gulf State Steel after 30 years of service. He loved his family and friends and had a gentle kind spirit, and will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harim and Gertie Harper; brother, Dyar Harper.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ann Harper; daughter, Sharlene Smith; son, Sam (Tracy) Harper; grandchildren, April (Wesley) Klein, Joshua Baker and Kelsie Harper; great-grandchildren, Jacie and Jackson Klein, Eva Ajamouli; sister, Linda Womack; several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-laws; and special friend, Teresa Fowler.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
