Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for Will Roger Deerman, who went to live with his Heavenly Father June 17, 2012. The Revs. Steven Helms and Jim Browning will officiate. Burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery. Village Chapel Funeral Home directing.
Roger was born Aug. 20, 1935, in Guntersville, Ala., and later moved to Gadsden where he worked at Gulf State Steel. He later retired from Gulf State Steel and the United States Army after 33 years of service. He was a member and High Priest of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a lifelong member of VFW Post 3186. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce May Seabourn Deerman; sisters, Katie Conner and Roxie Deerman.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Compton Deerman; children, Lane Deerman, Trena Deerman, Erica Deerman and Jordan Deerman; grandchildren, Jena Wise, Heather Deerman, Steven Tyler Deerman, Christopher Deerman, Nicholas Deerman; stepchildren, Roger (Tamessa) Compton, David (Becky) Compton, Scott (Teresa) Compton, Gregg (Kathy) Compton and Trent (Susan) Compton; great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Masson, Jayden, Kambden, Jamie Jr., Ryan, Aubrie, Ethan, Sean and Emery; sister, Margie Nix; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Jordan Deerman, grandsons, Steven Deerman, Nick Deerman, lifelong friend, Steve Wacholz, nephews, Jerry Broccolo and Jason Conner.
The family expresses a special thanks to Jim Browning, Dr. H. Patel, Dr. George Walker, Dr. Castillo, nurses of the cancer center, and ninth-floor nurses of Gadsden Regional Medical Center.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 this evening at the funeral home.
