Graveside services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at Rainbow Memorial Gardens for Mrs. Avis J. Long, 93, of Gadsden, who passed away on June 17, 2012. Chaplain Jonathan Powell officiated. Her great-grandson, Carson McCreless, gave a eulogy. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Service directing.
Mrs. Long was born on Aug. 5, 1919, in Blount County and was a longtime resident of Gadsden and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. She enjoyed quilting and working with her flowers.
She was preceded in death by her husband, F.N. Long; parents, Ellis and Ives McGriff; sister, Dean Chambers; and her brother, Bud McGriff.
She is survived by her son, Wayne (Pat) Long, Attalla; daughter, Elaine (Larry) Thompson, Gadsden; grandchildren, Barry (Lynette) Long, Scott (Lisa) Long, Bruce (Beth) Long, Kelly (Jeff) Ford, Kim McMullins; and granddaughter and caregiver, Jonah Thompson; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Conola Langley, Johnnie Hyche; sisters-in-law, Louise Cline and Mary Jo Winkles; special friend and chosen daughter, Norma Jean Fortenberry.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Reed, Michael Fortenberry, Dennis Langley, Jimmy Thompson, Larry Thompson and Royce Chambers.
