A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Crestwood Cemetery for Charles R. Starr, 74, Hokes Bluff, who went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 18, 2012. The Revs. Harvey Beck and Steve Baccus will officiate. Crestwood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Starr was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hokes Bluff, where he served on many committees until his health prevented his attendance. He graduated from Hokes Bluff High School and attended Snead State Community College. He later retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. with 37 years of service.
Mr. Starr was a hard-working, honest man. He loved to work outside and help others. He was preceded in death by his parents, C.L. and Bertha Starr.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Sewell Starr; and daughter, Charlean Starr.
Other survivors are his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Treva and Ausbon Smith; several cousins and many friends.
Pallbearers: Jason Latham, Sherrill Morris, Jimmy Posey, Will Posey, Larry Sandlin and Scott Smith.
Honorary pallbearers: James Copeland, David Floyd, Tommy Floyd, Andy Gardner, Loyd Henson, Wayne Lee and Buddy Sandlin.
Special thanks to the staff at Cherokee County Health and Rehab, Alzheimer's Unit, Jennifer Ragan and Sammye Hill. Since the morning in March of 2007 when our lives were forever changed, we have been touched by scores of caring people in Birmingham, Centre, Gadsden and Hokes Bluff. We will always remember the many kindnesses extended to us.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Kid's Kingdom at First United Methodist Church of Hokes Bluff, 3001 Alford Bend Road, Hokes Bluff, AL 35903; or to the Cherokee County Health and Rehab Alzheimers' Unit, 877 Cedar Bluff Road, Centre, AL 35960, in memory of C.R. Starr.
The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
