Mary Ruth Gillaspy passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at McLeod Hospice House, Florence, S.C.

The family received friends for a short remembrance ceremony at the family residence, 1511 Ballentine Road, at 7 p.m. Friday, June 29, 2012. Brown-Pennington-Atkins is serving the family.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, MacDonald Owen Gillaspy, who passed away June 13, 2012.
Born in Mooresville, Ind., in 1927, Mary was the daughter of the late Howard and Olive Brown McMorris. Mary attended Purdue University and worked in the fashion design industry in St. Louis and New York in the 1950s. She raised three daughters, mostly in Gadsden, Ala., and began her 19-year career teaching middle school art and science in Alabama in 1970. She retired and moved with her husband to Hartsville, S.C. Mary and Mac enjoyed traveling in their motor home and were both avid Auburn fans.
Mary also was preceded in death by her sister, Ellen Norman; brother-in-law, Clyde Norman; and niece, Nancy Norman Witte, all of Indianapolis, Ind.
She is survived by her three daughters, Gayle (Daniel) Carrick of Sacramento, Calif.; Gloria Jean (William) Green of Hamburg, Iowa, Dr. Glenda (James Strickland) Gillaspy of Blacksburg, Va.; grandchildren, Emma Gillaspy Strickland of Blacksburg, Va., Kate Ellen Strickland of Blacksburg, Va., William MacDonald Green of Hamburg, Iowa; nephew, Gene Norman of Indianapolis, Ind.
