Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Chapel for Billie J. Hughes, born July 31, 1934, who went to be with her Lord on March 21, 2014. Bros. Tommy Bellew, Curtis Fuller and John Hammonds will officiate. Burial will follow at Young's Chapel Cemetery. Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Funeral Home & Cemetery is in charge of services.
Mrs. Hughes was a lifelong resident of Etowah County. She retired from Coosa Valley Convalescent Center in the dietary department and Hokes Bluff High School lunch room. She was a member of Fords Valley Baptist Church. She loved working outside, mowing the grass and growing flowers. She loved her family, friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Lavon Hughes; her parents, Dan and Edith Jenkins; brothers, Robert, Ray and Tommy Jenkins.
She is survived by her son, Terry Hughes; daughters, Cathy (Ed) Santiago and Tiea Barnard; eight grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; sisters, Tressa (Curtis) Fuller, Shirley (Thurston) Cothran and Clay Jenkins.
Special thanks to Diane, Jason and Heather from Gentiva Home Health Care; seventh-floor nursing staff at Gadsden Regional and Dr. Sanders; close friends, Betty Clemons, Jane Dickinson and Sue Sewell.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons.
Honorary pallbearers will be Gordon Clemons and Billy Joe Wallace.
The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
