David Edward Burgess, 66, of Brooksville, Fla., died Friday, May 2, 2014.

He was born in Wellington and graduated from Alexandria High School. He was a graduate of Gadsden State Technical College and Jacksonville State University. He played basketball for Gadsden State Community College.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and retired after 37 years from Goodyear as a powerhouse engineer and then moved to Brooksville, Fla.
David lived a full and happy life in his 66 years. He was an avid cyclist, a beloved Hokes Bluff Girls Basketball coach, a runner, street rodder, mechanic, craftsman, gardener and most importantly, he was a loving and loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and friend. He was preceded in death by parents, Lawrence Edward and Edna Ethel Clark Burgess; and brother, Thomas Wavel Burgess.
He is survived by wife, Wanda Worden Burgess; daughters, Donna Burgess (Clay) Alexander, Amber Burgess (Kieron) McFadyen; stepsons, Brian (Dyann) Jones, Raymond (Erin) Worden; stepdaughter, Jennifer (Robert) Mauldin; grandchildren, Stone, Jensen, Slade and Jolie Alexander, Zack and Anna Jones, Payden, Melanie and Haylee Chamberlain, Gibson Worden; siblings, Carolyn Burson, Shirley Burgess Bell, Dorothy Burgess, Kenneth (Debra) Burgess.
A memorial service to celebrate David's life will be held on May 17, 2014, at 2 p.m. at East Gadsden Baptist Church.
