Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014, at St. James Catholic Church for Leona Catherine Brugge, 87, who passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2014. The Rev. Marcus Voss, Benedictine Monk of St. Bernard's, will officiate. Burial will be at Forrest Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services is directing.
Ms. Brugge was the youngest of seven children. She was a graduate of St. James Catholic School and Gadsden High School. She worked several years for the Gadsden City Water Department and made many friends there. She began studies at The Holy Name of Jesus Hospital, where she graduated as an X-ray technician. She began her career working for Dr. Henry Grady Ford, Dr. Presley and Dr. W.W. Johnston and later with Dr. Gillman and Dr. Azar. Through these years, she worked with a group of wonderful men and women technicians who are still friends today. She was also a member of several organizations, including the Northeast Alabama Society of Radiologic Technology, Alabama Society Radiologic Technology, American Society Radiologic Technology. She was also a lifetime member of the Gadsden Art Association.
Leona was an active parishioner of St. James Catholic Church. She was the first female President of the Parish council. For more than 50 years, she co-chaired the annual Catholic Charities Organization. She participated in many other parish organizations through the years, such as the St. James Catholic Women's Sodality and the St. James School Board of Education. She was a strong believer of Catholic education and gave generously to St. James Catholic School during her lifetime. She has a garden at the school facility in honor of the Blessed Mother of Jesus.
She loved to travel and traveled worldwide. She and several others traveled together for many years.
Ms. Brugge was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Anna Brugge; brothers and sisters, Raymond Henry (Sarah) Brugge, George Benjamin (Mary) Brugge, Arnold Peter (Helen) Brugge, Hubert Carl (Logene) Brugge, Clarebell Marie Brugge and Eleanora Edna (Elmer) Burger; and nephews, Raymond Lee Brugge and George Benjamin Brugge Jr.
She is survived by her nephews, Richard Brugge, Steven Brugge, Thomas Burger, Greg Brugge and Karl Burger; and niece, Anna Brugge Fulmer.
We thank those who helped in the care of her during these last years as she fought Parkinson's disease. May her soul rest in peace.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. James Catholic School.
The family will accept friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church prior to the service.
