Funeral services for Mr. John Albert Smith will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Lincoln Hill Cemetery. The Rev. W.H Granger will officiate. West Gadsden Funeral Home Inc. is in charge.
John was born July 31, 1938, to the late Willabella Carter and Edgar Smith. He made his heavenly transition on July 5, 2013.
John received his general education in the Attalla City School System and was a graduate of Norris High School, Class of 1960. He also attended Gadsden State Technical Institute and graduated in 1980.
John was reared by Mr. Will and Mrs. Mazelle Smith. He was raised in the church. At an early age, John confessed Christ and united with the Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Attalla, Ala. He served willing and faithfully as an usher and Sunday School member for many years until his health began to fail. He was dedicated to the neighborhood, always assisting others in any way possible. He loved his community, church and his family.
He was united in holy matrimony to Mrs. Catherine Stokes on January 10, 1964, and to this union four children were born.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Catherine Stokes Smith; his mother and father, Mrs. Willabelle Carter and Mr. Edgar Smith; two brothers, Riley and Bernard Carter; and parents/grandparents, Mr. Will and Mazelle Smith; several aunts and uncles.
He leaves to cherish his faithful and loving memories, his children, John Albert Smith Jr., Gadsden, Tonya Smith, Attalla, Mrs. Sherry Turner (Tony), Attalla, and Willie Edgar Smith, Attalla; one brother, Mr. Eddie Carter, Detroit, Mich.; one aunt, Mrs. Bonita Ray, Philadelphia, Pa.; three grandchildren, Alexandra Smith, Kaxandria Smith and Princess Erica Smith; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Davis A. Morgan (Eddie James); two brothers-in-law, Raymond and Willie Stokes; as well as a host of many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
