Peggy Clark Obituary

Graveside services will be at noon today at Crestwood Cemetery for Mrs. Peggy Townsend Clark, 67, of Gadsden, who died Tuesday at Gadsden Regional Medical Center. The Rev. Johnny Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Funeral Home is in charge of services.
Mrs. Clark was known as "Peggy on the Flagpole" as she set the world record for flagpole sitting in 1964. In a contest sponsored by radio station WGAD, Peggy won numerous prizes, including a new car for sitting a total of 215 days. Peggy was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Clark; father, Robert L Townsend; brother, Bobby Townsend; sister, Betty Jones; and stepfather, Walker Dunson.
She is survived by son, Wendell (Amy) Clark; grandchildren, Katelyn and Dagan Clark; mother, Doris Dunson; brothers, Billy and Mike (Debbie) Townsend; sister, Phyllis Scott; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Cancer Society.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
