LARIZ, HARRY D., JR., 65
Chielfland - Harry D. Lariz, Jr., 65, who was born and raised in Key West, Florida, passed away July 4, 2013 after a long illness. Harry played varsity football for Key West High and received a scholarship for his great plays on the football field, earning him the nickname, "Stonewall" for his tackling ability. In 1968, at the age of 20, Harry joined the Key West Police Department. In 1969, he was shot point blank during an arrest. He earned a commendation from the department, and although he suffered life-threatening injuries and was told he could retire, he continued to serve on the department for 23 years, retiring as a Lieutenant in 1991. In 1972, Harry also received the "Police Officer of the Year" award. Harry always dreamed of living in the country and moved to Chiefland, FL after his retirement. Harry loved his home and showed pride in everything he did. He was a very devoted and loving son, brother, father, grandfather and friend who would do everything he could to help his neighbors, family and friends.
Harry was born September 6, 1947 to Harry D. and Edwina (Martinez) Lariz, Sr. He was one of three sons who served on the department; older brother, Antonio Lariz (deceased) and his younger brother, David Lariz (deceased).
Harry leaves behind many loving family members and friends: daughter, Amanda Lariz-McDaniel (Kristopher); sons, Stephen Lariz and Andrew Davila; grandchildren, Olivia, Christian and Grace Lariz-McDaniel; Mary and Greg Spike (family), Matilda "Tilly" Lariz (sister-in-law), Alfred Brost (devoted friend), nieces, nephews and numerous others.

I had the opportunity to go to Key West High School with Harry and David. I graduated with Harry and play football for three years. Harry was an amazing football player and I believe he broke my nose on one occasion. I also went on to become a police officer in Miami and know from talking to fellow officer in Key West that Harry was as good a police officer as he was a football player. My prayers are with all of Harry's family and friends. God bless you all.

Just a note to Harry's family and friends. I went to High School in Key West with Harry. I also had the experience of playing football with Harry, though nowhere near at the level he played at. I too went on to a career in law enforcement and finished nearly 27 years in Miami. Harry and David were both friends and I know he was a fine law enforcement officer who stayed the course. I will maintain great memories of Key West and all the Lariz brothers. My prayers are with you all. God bless all of you.

I think Mr. Lariz should have been 'officer of the year' in 1969! I'm happy that he had a chance to live in the 'country' for a spell. Chiefland certainly meets that designation.
RIP Mr. Lariz.
