FRANKS, ELIZABETH

(BETTY) BARY

Tallahassee - Elizabeth (Betty) Bary Franks of Gainesville, FL passed away January 10, 2013 in Tallahassee, FL at age 96.

Betty was born April 25, 1916 in Taylorville, IL and was reared in St. Petersburg, FL; she moved to Alachua County in 1938 after graduating from Florida State College for Women (now FSU). She also studied at Duke University and the University of Florida.

A retired teacher, she taught in Waldo, Archer, and Gainesville High School prior to World War II; she later taught English and Social Studies at Howard Bishop Junior High/Middle School until her retirement in 1981. During retirement she traveled extensively throughout the world. Until she became ill in 2011, she was a volunteer with Friends of the Library and a volunteer English teacher of adult students at the International Learning Center at Parkview Baptist Church.

She was an active member of the Gainesville Woman's Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Lois B. Emmel Parliamentary Law Unit, the American Association of University Woman, and the Kerygma Bible class of First Baptist Church. She was also a member of several weekly bridge groups. As a youth she studied piano and was an avid music lover and passed on her love of music to her children. A voracious reader, she participated in three book discussion groups and visited the public library several times a week. She also authored a book of poems entitled Thoughts in Flight.

Betty was characterized by expressions of loving-kindness and helpfulness. She enjoyed negotiating a good deal at a garage sale; she enjoyed frequent trips to the mountains of North Carolina; a favorite activity was supporting and participating in her grandchildrens' activities; she also enjoyed listening to her granddaughter and son-in-law sing. She was an enthusiastic life-long learner and a teacher in everything that she did.

Betty was predeceased by her husband Claude M. (Red) Franks, her parents Robert A. Bary and Flossie Sharp Bary, and brothers Thomas Lee Bary, Sr., and Robert Sharp Bary. She is survived by her two daughters Elizabeth (Betty Ann) Franks of Gainesville and Linda Lee Crew (and husband Gary) of Tallahassee; grandchildren Elizabeth L. (Lori) Poole of Tallahassee, FL, Shawn A. Poole (and wife Charlene) of Crawfordville, FL, Kenneth A. Poole (and wife Marianne) of Cincinnati, OH, and great-grandson Riley A. Poole of Cincinnati, OH.
