RICHARD "DICK", 97

Gainesville - Richard "Dick" Burges, 97, of Gainesville, Florida, died November 27, 2012.

He was born in London, England on April 10, 1915. Dick's study of engineering was halted with the onset of World War II. He spent most of his six years of service in the British Indian Army, serving initially in Burma and later in India as part of the "Forgotten Army." After the war, he came to the United States, where he married and raised a family in New Jersey. He was an industrial engineer and business owner in New York, Georgia, and South Carolina until his retirement to Florida.

His preeminent interests throughout his life were learning and travel. He had a special affinity for people who worked hard for their living. He maintained friendships that spanned decades, countries, and generations. While remaining British his whole life, he considered himself international.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Petrine "Pat" Burges, his brother, Joseph Burges, and his son-in-law, Bill O'Bryant.

Survivors include his son, Richard J. Burges and his wife, Adrienne; his daughter, Leslie, all of Gainesville, Florida; five grandchildren: Jason Glover, Molly Burges, Jenny Burges, Rick Burges, and Alex O'Bryant; and 17 nieces and nephews.
