Constance Jeannette DeMange Cross, aged 88, passed away on Monday, May 6, 2013 at Harbor Chase Assisted Living Facility following a long illness. Connie Cross was born on July 20, 1924 in Oregon City, Oregon, the oldest daughter of Jacques Jean DeMange and Alice Biermann DeMange.

Following her graduation from Oregon City High School in 1942, she attended the University of Washington in Seattle, from which she earned her Bachelors and Masters Degrees, both with a major in Geography. Eager to see the nation's landscape during World War II, she and another coed from the University of Washington bicycled the 1300 miles from Seattle to Los Angeles in June, 1944. The following summer she traveled by bus with three other students to New York City, where she spent the summer working as a cartographer.

Connie met her husband, Dr. Clark I. Cross, at the University of Washington, where he was also working on his graduate degrees. They were married on June 27, 1946. Connie and Clark moved to Gainesville in 1949, where he taught at the University of Florida for over thirty years. They enjoyed summers at Mount Rainier National Park in Washington, and later she and Clark spent their summers camping throughout the West. For many years Connie was active with the Berean class at the First Presbyterian Church, the Friends of the Library, and the Gainesville Garden Club. She worked every election as a poll worker and precinct clerk for two decades. She was an avid gardener, she liked to make handicrafts and Christmas ornaments, and she was devoted to the pack of dogs that she so loved.

Connie was predeceased by her husband and her younger son, Bruce S. Cross. She is survived by her other son, John A. Cross and his wife, Joann Noe Cross, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; her daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Mallory Cross of Gainesville; and her grandson, William A. Cross and his wife, Shana Moss Cross, of London, England.

A memorial service for Connie will be held on Monday, May 13th, 2013 at 11:00am at the Forest Meadows Funeral Home Chapel.
