David Saul Cohen, 86-1/2, of Gainesville, FL, passed away Sunday, 3-16-14 at Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 29 years, Hanna "Honey" Cohen and is survived by daughters Laura Sanches and Debra Cohen of Burbank, CA, stepsons Paul Shear and his wife Robyn of Gainesville, FL, Marc Shear of Ocala, FL, 6 grandchildren, Brian Shear, Matthew Shear, Marissa Sanches, Jacob Shear, Allison Shear and Max Shear, sister-in-law Phyllis Cohen of Miami, FL, a niece, 2 nephews and several cousins.
David was born in Chicago to the late Samuel and Vera Cohen, brother of the late Edwin (Phyllis) and Daniel (Hollis). He served in the Air Force with honorable discharge as Sergeant. He graduated from University of Illinois
, BS in 1950, LL.B in 1953, replaced by a Juris Doctor degree in 1968. He held several licenses including Illinois Supreme, Appellate and Circuit Courts, was involved in numerous societies, fraternities, ABA and Chicago Bar Association. When he moved to FL he changed careers and worked in food brokerage and optical sales.
He served on various civic and political boards and Jewish organizations throughout his life, notably President of Northwest Suburban Jewish Congregation in Morton Grove, IL (1960-61 and 1964-1966). Later in life, he truly enjoyed being part of The Barber Gators and enjoyed spending time with The Romeos in Gainesville.
Graveside funeral services were held Monday, 3-17-14 at 3pm at Forest Meadows Memorial Park East, Military Garden of Honor.
