Gainesville - Gary Paul Matthews was born April 1, 1951 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Harold and Susan Matthews, and died November 9, 2012 in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He came to Gainesville, Florida in 1984. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, where he was an Altar Server, Usher, and Eucharistic Minister. He volunteered with many organizations in Alachua County for 25 years. He was one of the first to volunteer at St. Francis House in 1984, founded St. Patrick's Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, served as member and Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 6108, volunteered with the North Central Florida Aids Network and was an early supporter of the Home Van, which feeds the homeless. He was "a brother of Christ, taking care of all God's children".

He is survived by three children, Maureen, Jacob, and Jessica, all of Harrisonburg, VA; 8 grandchildren; two sisters, Linda and Connie of Orlando, Fl; nieces Brittany, Mandi, and Tanith of Orlando, Fl; and his caregiver, a man he called his son for 28 years, Robert "Burt" Wetherington of Gainesville, FL. He was preceded in death by one brother, Dale.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, January 7, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with Fr. Ed Murphy as presider.
