Gladys Elliott James


Melrose - Mrs. Gladys Elliott James, age 102, resident of Melrose, FL, retired school teacher, passed away January 8, 2013 at Gainesville Health Care Center. Mrs. James graduated from old Lincoln High School in late 1920s and pursued her dream of becoming a teacher by attending Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee Alabama. Transferring to Bethune Cookman College in Daytona Beach, FL, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. She recalls interacting with Mary McLeod Bethune while a student on campus. She was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, and served as Sunday school teacher, and the Home Missions.

She is survived by 2 nephews, Andrew L James Sr. (Betty), Gainesville, FL, William H. James (Ruby), St. Petersburg, FL; four nieces, Barbara J. Jackson (Richard), Powder Springs, GA., Delores J. Wilson, Inverness, FL., Nettie Mae Fields, Fort Lauderdale, FL., Caretha Bostick, Gainesville, FL, Cousin Carl Lee Elliott (Brenda), Naples, FL; God daughter, Voncille Baker (Wilfred).

Funeral services for Mrs. James will be held 11A.M., Saturday, January 19, 2013 at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 540 S.R. 219, Melrose, FL. with the Rev. Dr. Willie Mayberry delivering the Eulogy. Burial Will follow in St. John Cemetery. Visitation Friday at Chestnut Memorial Chapel 2P.M.-7P.M. and on Saturday at the church one hour before the service. The family will meet at the church 30 minutes before the service.
