Gainesville - Greta Balas McNab, 76, of Gainesville Florida passed away on Monday, October 7th, 2013, while visiting family in Guatemala. Greta was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil on October 28th, 1936 to Joao and Emma Balas. She graduated from the University of Sao Paulo with a degree in Biology, and subsequently married Brian Keith McNab, moving to live in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1961, Greta and Brian settled in Gainesville, and began a family in 1963. Greta returned to studies during 1978 to obtain a nursing degree from Santa Fe Community College. With that, she began working as a pediatric oncology nurse at Shands Hospital, eventually becoming a charge nurse of the floor. She continued her studies, obtaining a Master's Degree in Health Care Administration at NOVA University, and represented nurses to obtain improved working conditions while working to cure children stricken with cancer. She retired from Shands in 2000, after 20 years of service. Greta is survived by her small family who still loves her dearly including her sons Roan Balas McNab and Derrick Balas McNab, and two grandchildren, Matthew Balas Albeño McNab and Michelle Renee Albeño McNab.

A celebration of Greta's life will be held between 4:30 - 6:00 pm on Thursday, October 17th, 2013 at the Baughman Center on the campus of the University of Florida, located at the juncture of Radio Road and Museum Road at the western end of Lake Alice. In lieu of flowers she would appreciate a donation to the charity of your choosing.
