Herbert Langley Hair, a resident of the Haile Community (Alachua County, Florida) died early Sunday, December 30, 2012, after a courageous two and a half year battle with lung cancer. He was 83 years old.

Herbert was born and raised in Chiefland, Florida. In his youth, he sold newspapers before school and ran a restaurant with his brother, Lindy, in his teens before graduating from Chiefland High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. After returning home, he worked for the railroad for one year and his train rode by CR 235 in the Haile Community. Little did he know he would be living there beginning in 1979.

In the 1960s, Herbert moved to Gainesville and he and one of his friends were contracted to supply ice to the Gator football team's home games and they got to stay on the sidelines to watch the games. He worked and managed several Chevron stations in Gainesville, then owned a Chevron service station in Gainesville for over 40 years until his retirement in 1997. He also met his wife, Anne, at a Chevron station on Newberry Road. He and his wife opened Archer Road Seafood Market in 1977 and were in business for 22 years.

In 1979 he built the family's home and lived there until his death.

Herbert will be remembered for working hard and instilling that work ethic in his three daughters. He loved growing greens and hot peppers and shared his garden with family and neighbors. He will also be remembered for his strong resemblance to Carroll O'Connor (Archie Bunker) and was even asked once for his autograph. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking, and the Gators. Herbert especially loved riding his 4-wheeler around his property feeding the deer and wild turkeys and kicking out trespassers.

Preceded in death by his parents, William Lamar and Eunice Hardee Hair, and six older siblings, Herbert is survived by his wife of 42 years, Anne Leivonen Hair (Haile Community), his daughters, Lisa Cenac (Louis) of Jacksonville, FL, Krista Hair Perkins and Bridgett Hair, both of Haile Community, numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, four cats and a patch of greens in the garden that will be ready soon.

A special thanks to Dr. Priya K. Gopalan and all the staff at the Hematology/Oncology Unit at the Davis Medical Plaza at the University of Florida for the compassionate care.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Newberry United Methodist Church, 24845 West Newberry Road, Newberry, FL 32669, with Pastor Robert B. Roseberry officiating.
