Hawthorne - Joseph E. Barnett, 63 of Hawthorne, passed on to be with the Master Fisherman on June 23, 2014 to continue his journey for the "big catch." Joe was born July 14, 1950 in Willard, Ohio. He came to Florida in the 1970's and never left.

He worked with the Alachua County School Board in Maintenance, then later as the Capital Outlay Manager in Planning and Construction. He retired from the Florida Department of Corrections as Regional Construction Project Administrator in 2009. He was blessed with wonderful "best buds" to deer hunt, fish and gator hunt during his retirement.

Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Ollie Cole of Shelby, OH. He is survived by his mother, Lillie Adkins of Coal Grove, OH, sister Kay Dearth of Beverly, OH. Also surviving is his wife, Denise Tyre Barnett, son Daniel Barnett (Andrea) of Starke, Heather Ward (Brian) of Cross Creek, Joseph B. Barnett of Starke, and Alexander Barnett of Gainesville. He was the very proud "Poppa" to seven grandchildren, Thomas Barnett, Alexis and Angelica Barnett, Owen and Cody Ward and Faith and Conner Barnett.

It was Joe's preference to have no service, but for friends and family to gather at his "Man Cave," have a cookout and watch NASCAR on July 5, 2014 around 3:00 p.m., 173 East Cowpen Lake Road, Hawthorne, FL. You may honor Joe by making donations to the Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation, 4371 Veronica S. Shoemaker Blvd. Fort Myers, FL 33916. Make checks payable to FCS Foundation.
