JOSEPH WILLIAM, 81
Joseph William Donnelly, 81, died after a long illness in Gainesville, at the University of Florida
Shands Hospital on May 6th. Joseph was born in Rutland, Vermont on February 2, 1933 and grew up in nearby Hubbarton. His fondest memories were of summers working on his grandfather's farm and his time in the Boy Scouts where he was an Eagle Scout. Joe graduated from Rutland High School and joined the U.S. Navy
. He proudly served two tours in Vietnam aboard several aircraft carriers including the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk and achieved the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. He retired after 23 years of service and with his wife, Kate, settled in Lexington Park, Maryland. There he continued his engineering work as a civil servant at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. He pursued his passion for boating and dedicated many years as 'Coach Donnelly' and a board member for the Little League Association. In 1990, Donnelly and his family moved to the Gainesville area, in the village of Cross Creek. Together with his wife, he built a real estate sales and appraisal business. He enjoyed more than two decades of the Florida climate, gardening and golfing with family and friends.
Joseph is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kathleen Louise Fleming Donnelly. He is also survived by his children Joseph Patrick, Sharon, Billy, Ricky, Jimmy, Bridget and numerous relatives. He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Flossie McIntyre Donnelly and a son, Steven.
Arrangements are under the care of the Williams-Thomas Funeral Home in Gainesville, Florida. Mr. Donnelly will be honored with a burial at sea aboard a naval vessel later this summer.
