McCAWLEY, NINA JEAN BULLINGTON, 84
Gainesville - Nina Jean Bullington McCawley, who settled in Gainesville more than 40 years ago after traveling the world as an Army wife, died July 12 at her home. She was 84. Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, James A. McCawley. Jim was best known for his devotion to local veterans' causes, including the Veterans Memorial in Kanapaha and the "Flag in Every Classroom" initiative. With Jim, she raised three loving children, Dorothy McCawley, Mary (George) Zinger, and Rick (Lisa Gibbs) McCawley; all three children graduated from Buchholz High School and the University of Florida
. Her children are passing on Jean's love of family to grandchildren Katrina, Emily and Graham Zinger, and Benjamin and Laura McCawley. Born just outside of Dothan, Alabama, and the second-to-youngest of seven children, Jean's ties to Gainesville began with her twin sisters, Rebecca (Alec) Bliziotes and Ruth (Jimmy) Ledbetter. Jean loved her many nieces and nephews dearly, even caring for Re-becca's three children while Jean was a senior at Gaines-ville High School. Jean's other siblings lived in Alabama and Jacksonville, Byron "Buster" (Grace) Bullington, Quentin Bullington, and Elizabeth (Vernon) Martin, who died too young. Her only surviving sibling, Hilda Quamme, lives in Wisconsin with her three children. Her wedding to Jim changed Jean into a world traveler. Jim's Army service took the family to Alaska, New Mexico, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Alabama, and overseas to Okinawa and Athens. The family moved to Gainesville in 1970, and Jean finally could make a permanent home. In her last few years, Jean was cared for by her children, grandchildren Katrina and Emily, and her great-niece, Brandi (Alex) Koonce, as well as many dedicated caregivers. Jean's last years were spent surrounded by family, friends, and loving caregivers, including those from Clare Bridge House and Haven Hospice. In lieu of flow-ers, Jean requests that you help others in need. Milam Funeral Home in Gainesville, (352)-376-5361, is handling arrangements. A funeral committal and entombment will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in Forest Meadows Central mau-soleum where we will follow her wish to sing her soul into heaven.
