Dunnellon - Dr. Richard F. Matthews, 84, of Spruce Creek Reserve in Dunnellon, FL, passed away at Sylvia's Hospice House on December 11, 2013.

Richard was born in Alabama on June 1, 1929 to parents, O.B. and Eunice (Kelly) Matthews. He grew up in Rockledge, FL and graduated from High School there. He graduated from University of Florida with an MBA degree. He then joined the US Army as a 1st Lieutenant and served in Korea. After being discharged, he continued his education and earned his PHD at Cornell University as a food scientist. He worked in the tea industry for 10 years, then became a professor at UF where he retired after 29 years. Richard is preceded in death by his parents, his three sisters, and his first wife, Dorothy Franklin Matthews.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Matthews; son, Richard Neil Matthews; daughter, Catherine Matthews; 3 grandchildren, Brandon, Brianna and Jon; step-children, Jeffery, Gregory, and Geni, as well as 7 step-grandchildren; and brother O.B. Matthews and wife, Lucy.

There will be a memorial service for Richard at Queen of Peace Catholic Church on Friday, December 20th at 1:00 PM. Arrangements are under the care Roberts Funeral Homes Bruce Chapel West. 352-854-2266.
